House Industries

As an admirer of great typography and design, so I am an admirer of House Industries.

Their description sums it up the best:

Known throughout the world as a prolific type foundry, House Industries has made a considerable impact on the world of design. House Industries fonts scream from billboards, wish happy whatever from tens of thousands of greeting cards, serve as the basis for consumer product logos and add elements of style to a wide range of mainstream media.

Watch the trailer for House Industries now. Music by The Bird and the Bee.

Listening Room

Listening Room is basically a web-based chat room where you can upload and stream music to all participants. The creator, Abe Fettig, has an informative writeup about the progression of the site.

That's it at face value. But let's take it a step further. The potential here is huge.

What if you're a famous musician or producer? You broadcast to your loyal fans via Twitter and Facebook that you'll be on Listening Room at 3 p.m. EST and if they come join the chat, you'll share with them an exclusive track. Uh oh, the system shuts you out because 1.3 million people also want to 'chat' with Justin Beiber? Well, if you join today for a small monthly fee, you'll get faster service, downloads AND personalized alerts about when your favourite musicians log-in to chat and share.

The Future of Screen Technology

The video was created by The Astonishing Tribe, a group that creates "the best performing, most astonishingly beautiful user interfaces for any screen and any device." If the video is any indication of their work, I'm impressed.

Remember when we thought that digital newspaper in Minority Report was cool?

Vintage Japanese Monster Anatomy

How fun are these pictures? The inner nerd in me is so happy.

A little write-up about the images: "The anatomical features of Gamera and his foes are detailed in a set of illustrations found in one volume of the Kaijū-Kaijin Daizenshū movie monster book series published by Keibunsha in 1972."

More images found here with translations as well.

Chernobyl 25 years later

On April 26th 1986 at 1:23 A.M. reactor number four at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, near the town of Pripyat, ruptured a vessel during several extreme power spikes. Several explosions followed and these caused the graphite moderator components of the reactor to be exposed to air, setting them on fire. The fire sent a plume of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere. It drifted over large parts of the Sovjet Union and Western Europe. 50 People died as a direct result of the disaster and it is thought up to 4,000 people have died as a result of being exposed to the radioactive materials which entered the atmosphere.

In 2011, 25 years later, the area surrounding Chernobyl still looks like a ghost town. Photos by David Schindler. I recommend seeing these and other photos in full size here.

Volcano!

Volcanoes have always fascinated me. When Eyjafjallajökull blew, there were really some stunning images that emerged. Not only was the destruction and environmental (and societal, for that matter) impact impressive, so was the technology available to record the historic eruption.

On Jan. 6, 2011, a NASA satellite snapped a shot of the Russian volcano, Kizimen, erupting. It had been gently erupting since New Years Eve. The image is below as well as a couple other breathtaking images of various volcanoes erupting as shot from space. The original article and photo gallery is here.

Kizimen, located in the southern part of Kamchatka, Russia

Cleveland, located in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands

Mount Merapi, located in Indonesia

Manam, located in Papua, New Guinea
